Hi there! I'm a Graphic Design MA student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Before attending SCAD, I spent several years working in arts management in the US and Asia, and completed a masters degree in East Asian Studies.
Three things to know about me:
1. I believe in research-based design
I know how to execute a research plan, extract insights, and then translate those insights into innovative, user-centered design concepts. I’ve interviewed the bad boys of Chinese art, observed ultra runners in the field, and stalked mall shoppers. I also have solid writing skills honed during my undergraduate years as a History major at Yale. Whether the deliverable is print packaging or UX design, I see research as an essential step towards creating effective, original work.
2. I can wear many hats
Before attending SCAD, I spent several years working in the nonprofit arts world. I started my career as a grantwriter and web designer for Boston’s leading cultural institutions, including the Atlantic Monthly and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Later, I worked in arts management and development for New York City dance organizations. I’m used to pushing hard, thinking outside the box, and sticking to a tight budget. And I know how to jump in and help with whatever’s needed, from event planning to coding.
3. I love exploring
In 2002 I decided to learn Chinese. I moved to Taipei to study Mandarin at Taiwan’s National University, ultimately securing a part-time position as a translator at the National Palace Museum, the world’s largest collection of Chinese art. Later, I returned to the states, where I studied Chinese contemporary art, earning a master’s degree in East Asian Studies from Stanford. I have worked in Shanghai, lived in Hong Kong, and traveled throughout Asia. These cross-cultural experiences inform my design practice: I try not to make assumptions. And I approach each project as an exploration of user behavior.
